The waterfront below the cottage is now part of the Marine Reserve established to protect dugong and turtle habitat. Walk to designated areas outside the Marine Reserve to fish (please check the Tide Guide for legal size) or sit back on the deck to enjoy the subtle colors revealed as the tides change.
Medium level water restrictions are in place in the Redland Shire. The house water is supplied from a rain water tank, however yard taps are not. Please limit use of water from these outlets.
The meaning…
Wyrd in Anglo-Saxon times was the silent Goddess who presided over the destiny of gods and men.
In medieval Norse mythology, the three Fates – the Past, the Present and the Future attended every birth to cast the weird (fate or destiny) of the child’s life.
These three heavenly beings, depicted in the 13th century as maidens by a fountain at the base of the World Tree, inexorably wove the fate of the world.
Time, of which they are made seemed to have forgotten the three Fates until Shakespeare wrote about the weird sisters in Macbeth. Portrayed out of character as hags or witches, they predict what fate has in store for Banquo and Macbeth….
Wyrd sits calmly overlooking the timeless waters of Moreton Bay…
a safe haven
reassuring – all is as it should be.
The environment…
Lamb Island, or Ngudooroo (paper bark tree) as it is known to the Aboriginal people of this area, is the second smallest of the southern Moreton Bay Islands and is 1.5 km wide by 2.5 long with a population of approximately 350. Typical summer temperatures range from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius and in Winter from 11 to 21 degrees Celsius making Lamb Island the perfect all year round holiday destination.
This sub-tropical island has an abundance of native flora and fauna, and is edged with mangrove foreshores interspersed with sandy beaches. There are approximately 200 species of birds and an abundance of fish in the surrounding water. Fishing is a frequent past time of the locals who may be persuaded to disclose the favorite local fishing spots, preferred bait and appropriate tackle.
Mozzies and midgies are present, as they are in all costal areas, particularly after heavy rain. They are most prevalent at dusk. The bedrooms at “Wyrd” are fully screened and mosquito nets provided to deter that elusive nocturnal mosquito. Personal insect repellent is advisable when out doors.
What to bring with you…
Food and beverages as the Kiosk only stocks basic items. Linen is provided. Please bring toiletries, personal insect repellent and other essentials such as toilet tissue, detergent and washing powder if visiting for more than 2 nights.
What not to bring…
Pets! The land in not fenced and as in many parts of the world including Europe, ticks are present with small animals most at risk. Wandering pets are also a real threat to the abundant wild-life.
